JAMES CARCASS

For the last 18 years James has been exploring the natural fluidity of molten glass. He has been obsessed with the unique and complex relationship between glass and light. Through a unique language of metallic patinas and asymmetric forms, James has tried to reveal the chameleon nature of the glass object.

When James finished his studies at Sunderland Polytechnic he worked as an assistant for Steven Newell and Catherine Hough at Glass Works. In 1993 James joined LA Studios and became the third partner with Andrew and Louise Hay. Here he designed and produced many production ranges as well as creating one off vessels and sculptures. At LA Studios he designed exclusive ranges for Conran, Heals and Liberties in London and Barneys and Gumps in New York.

Since 1998 James has been exhibiting with New London Glass. In 2003 he became the kilnform manager of Fusion Glass Designs, overseeing the production of many large architectural projects, recently he has taken over the management of the hot-shop at Danny Lane Ltd.

In 2008 James moved to Hungary, where he has a beautiful studio situated next to the Danube, where he continues to make and also teaches.

All of the glass is blown and is signed on the base. As the glass is entirely hand worked each piece is unique and may have slight variations in size and shape.
