MARTIN ANDREWS Glass
Originally from the West Midlands, Martin graduated in glass with a BA(hons) from West Surrey College of Art and Design. Between 1992-2000 he was a member of the London Glassblowing Workshop - running the workshop and making pieces to his own design. He also spent some time working for several leading glass Studios in Sweden, where the rural landscape there considerably influenced his work. He now combines these influences with other ideas taken from the natural world, particularly water and organic sea forms.
He captures the motion and fluidity of hot glass, using bright colours within the surfaces, which, once cool are often worked on further using etching techniques to give the glass its characteristic satin finish. All pieces are hand blown and signed using the finest crystal based glass.
Martin has also collaborated with a number of other artists over his 18 year career, notably silversmiths and lighting designers. He has been involved in many architectural projects, including windows for public buildings, corporate awards, pieces for film and television and restoration. One of the most important of these being the ’Sister Dora’ window, which is sandblasted and engraved using coloured layered glass, for Walsall Hospital, and a glass cross for St John’s Church, Ladywood.
