My work is a celebration of the animal. I am inspired by many sources including T’ang sculptures, Netsuke, fossils and bones. My work is equally about the material, method of construction and quality of surface which are in themselves an endless preoccupation. The ideas for new work frequently come through the generation of drawings and sketch modelling, having visited zoos and natural history collections. I try to echo a positive and optimistic mood in my work, focussing on capturing the spirit and characteristics of the animal in clay.
