SUNITA KHEDEKAR
Sunita was born and raised in a traditional Indian family in the Maharashtra region in western India. The cultural richness of India with its joyous religious festivals and traditional fabrics awoke an artistic vocation in her. She studied Fine Arts at the prestigious Sir JJ Institute of Applied Arts in Mumbai (Bombay).
After her graduation in 1991, she was hired by the advertising agency Sowbhagya as an illustrator, then working alongside the director of the agency Trikaya-Grey. In 1995, she created her own design studio and tried her hand at several techniques (stained glass, fresco, oil and acrylic). Her professional activities led her to work with designers and interior architects. This era saw the birth of her first exhibitions and early recognition. In 1999, she moved to England, where she still lives and works today.
Fascinated by the beautiful landscapes of the English countryside, Sunita began painting coloured compositions in rhythm with the seasons. However she did not forget her own roots and continued to draw inspiration from Indian themes. Art has been present in various forms throughout her life. During her studies, Sunita attended courses of classical Indian dance. In London, she started singing traditional Hindustani.
Her painting is a mixture of the warmth of her homeland and the charm of her adopted land. While the subject is English, her treatment of it as a colourful patchwork recalls her Indian origins. The artist prefers acrylics techniques. She addresses figurative and abstract, realistic and mythological subjects. Her architected landscapes are reminiscent of the geometric compositions of Paul Klee (German painter, twentieth century). Sunita draws her inspiration from nature and the things around her. Colour, shape or texture are enough to give her the idea for a painting. Her poetic work is a diary in which she shows the state of her emotions. The artist guides the viewer through her personal universe while leaving him free to his own interpretation.
